Nothing You Can Installation
Nothing You Can Do is a piece that captures the moment of a gaze and the power of a connection. The piece essentially is four portraits that stare across the room at each other, so that the piece becomes more about the space that is between them than it is about the paintings themselves. There are two small portraits and two large ones, looking across at each other. Because the paintings are shown in close proximity to each other, in order to view one of the paintings fully, the audience is enticed to step into the other paintings space and gain its perspective. The small portraits are painted in a simple and unsophisticated style. The moment of connection can be interrupted whenever someone walks through the intervening space; whereas, with the larger canvases, the look is overpowering, and no matter who or what interrupts the space between them, the connection is not broken. However, even though the paintings control the space, they are kept separate and apart from each other by the space. They will always be connected, but never together.
