This is a series of black and white portraits. The artist chose to limit the palette to shades of gray and values of black and white for several reasons. First, black and white abstracts, separating the art from the subject that is under observation. Second, in doing black and white portraits, the artist was free from the distraction of the subject’s natural appearance and was able to focus on the subject's character and personal qualities as well as the artist's feelings for them. Third, the limited palette of black and white breaks down the painting process to the bare essentials, permitting the artist to approach each painting in the simplest, most direct way possible. Finally, black and white images have an emotive, nostalgic appearance.
