I Heart Bob came about early in the artist's freshman year of college while everyone was working hard to define him or herself and make connections with the people around them. On Valentine’s Day the artist gave out 100 T-shirts to everyone in his hall. It was a Valentine’s jest to all of his friends. By printing and distributing these shirts to the people in his dorm the artist was making use of a promotional power demonstrated by more famous T-shirt campaigns such as “I heart NY.” People wearing the I Heart Bob slogan were in effect advertising for the artist. Because Bob is a very generic name it was easy for other people who did not know the artist to relate with the shirts. Therefore, this piece not only cultivates connections but questions identity and individuality.
